The "installation" (see picture on the right), is set in a corner of a lady’s
toilet in a college: it is a slide of a woman breastfeeding; her baby is
projected onto the breastfeeding chair (see bottom left picture).
Nursery rhymes and the noise from the toilet’s fan, have created a
great contrast.
The breastfeeding image is projected on to the breastfeeding chair,
which is set in a dark and dull environment, giving the viewers a very
uneasy feeling.
The ceramic chair (top left picture), a loo 'look-alike', refers to the
reality of the environment where the breastfeeding is taking place.
The strings, on the right hand side of the slide picture (see picture
on the right), reflect the `restrictions` in our modern society.
Both are a sarcastic and symbolic gesture regarding our attitudes
towards breastfeeding.
The aim of this installation is to reveal the reality and sub-text behind the
breastfeeding chair, that is a deep-seated attitude, in some people,
towards women breastfeeding their offspring in our modern society.
The installation directly invites the public to step into the lady's toilet
to see how some women were forced to breastfeed their babies.
